“Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.  The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe  and went up to him again and again, saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ And they struck him in the face” (John19:1-3)

We long for others to recognize and esteem us, as if the world confers nobility upon those born into prestige, talent, or diligence. Striving each day to hold our chins high, we imagine the sun will glimmer upon the jewels of accomplishment if only we can add enough weighty gems to the burden upon our heads. Necks crimp and shoulders groan under the impossible task of self-glorification. Those who manage to capture the admiration of others hold it for a moment before it tarnishes into disappointment.

True royalty bears the scars of incompatibility with the world. Humility cloaks those who pursue divine nobility. Despite the pain of rejection, misunderstanding, humiliation, a noble disciple seeks the recognition of one King alone. We must accept a less comfortable crown to enter our position with the King of Kings, one of surrender and self-sacrifice. Don a crown of thorns to bring glory to the eternal Kingdom.
